Time on My Side
The luxury sportswatch was born on October 21, 1927, when Mercedes Gleitze, the first woman to successfully swim the British Channel, was pulled half-conscious from the freezing waterway on one of her unsuccessful attempts. During the rescue, a journalist from the Times of London noticed something strange. "Hanging round her neck," he wrote, "Miss Gleitze carried a small gold watch, which was found this evening to have kept good time throughout." That miraculous wristwatch was a Rolex Oyster. Since then, Rolex has built on this success, producing watches for mariners, astronauts and action stars. To celebrate Rolex's 100th anniversary, the auctioneer Antiquorum is holding a special auction on April 17th. Men's Vogue presents a selection of the pieces up for bid, capturing the evolution of the Rolex sports watch from the Oyster to the present day.
