It Happened One Night (1934)
Sometimes the best fashion statement is not trying to make one at all. In It Happened One Night, Clark Gable removed his shirt and, to the shock of respectably dressed gents across the nation, was not wearing an undershirt. Gable said he chose not to, because removing it on-screen would have looked awkward. The impact was immediate. Following the film, the men's undershirt industry almost went bankrupt, so precipitous was the decline in sales.
